HEART RHYTHM Specialist

Dr Dhiraj Gupta MB BS, MD, DM, FRCP (London)

Dr Dhiraj Gupta is a Consultant Cardiologist at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH), and part of the largest cardiac rhythm unit in the United Kingdom.  He joined LHCH in March 2007, moving from St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London.  Dr Gupta is also an honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London and pursues his research interests there through collaboration with the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals in London.

Dr Gupta’s profile at the Imperial College can be seen HERE

Dr Gupta was a distinction holder throughout his undergraduate years from 1988 to 1994, and had set his sights upon a career in cardiology very early on. He was awarded the Commonwealth Fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology in 2000 which allowed him to receive intensive training at several reputed teaching hospitals in London.

  1. St. Bartholomew’s Hospital:                           Oct 2003 - Feb 2007

  2. Royal London Hospital:                                  Feb 2003- Sep 2003

  3. London Chest Hospital:                                  Oct 2001- Jan 2003

  4. St. George’s Hospital:                                      Oct 2000 - Sep 2001

He has also spent time at reputed international centres at Bordeaux and Zurich sharing the finer nuances of invasive electrophysiology with world-experts.

Dr Gupta has been awarded the National Health Service Clinical Excellence Award in 2010.

Professional Interests:

Dr Gupta practices in all areas of cardiology and has a special interest in disorders of heart rhythm. This involves assessment and management of patients with a variety of symptoms like palpitations, dizziness, faints, breathlessness and fatigue. He routinely performs curative ablation for both simple and complex heart rhythm disturbances, using the latest 3D mapping technologies to enhance the chances of success. Dr Gupta’s particular passion lies in catheter ablation for Atrial Fibrillation, and he has earned repute locally and regionally for his expertise at treating these patients.

Dr Gupta has developed the Palpitations and Arrhythmia pathway in conjunction with his colleagues in primary care to help streamline management of patients with heart rhythm disorders in the community. This pathway is part of the national QIPP (Quality Improvement and Innovation Programme) and is being rolled out across all GP practices in Merseyside and surrounding areas.

Dr Gupta has worked with the National Library for Health to assess the scientific evidence for treatment for Atrial fibrillation for the National Health Service. A summary of the work can be found here and here.

Dr Gupta works closely with the British Heart Foundation and has authored the Atrial Fibrillation Booklet for them. This booklet can be downloaded from here and British Heart Foundation AF booklet.pdf. He has also authored the BHF Factfiles for GPs that summarise management principles for Atrial Fibrillation. These can be downloaded BHF Factfile for GPs Part 1. AF diagnosis and management.pdf and Anticoagulation for AF. BHF Factfile.pdf.

Dr Gupta routinely implants implantable defibrillators, pacemakers, and cardiac resynchronisation devices.

Research Interests:

Dr Gupta is an honorary Senior Lecturer at the Imperial College London. He is leading on research into the mechanisms that underlie the relationship between risk factors and atrial fibrillation. He is investigating specific tools for measuring quality of life for patients with rhythm disturbances, and especially the magnitude and nature of impact of catheter ablation therapy on these measures. Dr Gupta is also trialling modifications in RF lesion set delivery for enhancing the results of catheter ablation for long standing persistent atrial fibrillation.

Dr Gupta is the principal investigator on the multicentre SMAAN-PAF trial as well as the PRESSURE trial, details of which can be found on the Clinical Trials website HERE
